Is Facebook good for recovery? Its good for zoning you out and keeping up with the gossip haha. Its a little bit addictive for me I jump on for 1 minute and end up on it for hours.

Re: Is Facebook good for recovery???
i think facebook is another addiction, if your on it all day chating your not out doing things and meeting people face to face and faceing your recovery head on, your hiding away from people yet you think your still in contact with the world because your talking on line but your hiding away and with all the friends on line you can still be on your own and very lonely letting people think your fine when you could do with talking face to face and have proper contact

I agree with you in part, the internet in general can be very addictive and in places like japan they have rehabilitation centres just for the internet and video games.
Facebook is good on one hand because you can chat with your mates or long lost pals from school but on the other hand you stay indoors on your chat essentially doing nothing and getting worse at genuine interaction with HUMANS, the less you talk to real people the harder it will be to talk to real people..
And think about it alot of people on facebook are friends with people they would never be friends with in real life,
its too invasive on privacy.

Hi, Facebook, skype and other tools of this kind are fantastic in moderation. They allow family and friends across the globe a chance to interact regularly and without breaking the bank, however prolonged periods of activity on facebook or say Yahoo mail with people you may never have met can be unhealthy. Bullying is also a big issue with social media as it creates a feeling of anomynity for the often faceless bully.

This is very true, the social online scene gives people a false sense of comfort and security becuase they feel safe talking nonsense when they dont have to deal with it face to face.
alot of people set up a fake accounts to harass people, best to ignore it and always be carefull and aware of what details you are giving to the internet and what they are publishing of your information, fraud and identity theft are rampant online but also very easilly avoided witha small bit of common sense

Good point cleanfreak
Facebook is only as good as what people do with it. If you like nice photos of nature, inspirational quotes, to follow good causes, face book is great... but many people hide behind Facebook and post rubbish about them selves and others... some people are so lonely and sad they resort to bullying.... others have nothing to do so they do nothing on Facebook,.... so think of the positive things you want Facebook to do for you and start a new revolution...

Thanks for all your comments people. I love Facebook "Bejeweled Blitz" but I find it takes up too much of my time.

Hi all. Facebook has the potential to involve the real community and generate interaction with people on your doorstep. It could also be a useful recovery and educational tool. Simply sharing events and resources in your area would be a good starting point.

Hi Ken, I think your right, Facebook can be an educational too as well as a place to share news and events. But I think this forum could even be a better place for a specific theme like addiction, where people can share their experience and learn from each other.

Once it's not used to abuse it's fine, it's not the real world and can be a welcome distraction on cold nights when you just want to relax after a long day at work. It doesn't even hit my radar when it comes to addictions I've had over my lifetime.

Facebook is only addictive for people who will become addicted to every thing they touch. Sure if its not Facebook it will be something else. We need to start talking to real people and stop hiding behind screens. No one talks to their neighbors anymore!
